Butaleja Woman MP Escapes Assassination Attempt in Narrow Escape

Florence Andiru Nebanda, the Woman MP for Butaleja District, narrowly escaped an assassination attempt just days after collecting nomination forms for re-election.

In an interview with Nile Post, Nebanda described the terrifying event that took place around 6 p.m. in the Doho Rice Scheme area while she was on her way to a funeral.

A man in a grey uniform, believed to be linked to a security company, pursued her car on a motorcycle bearing a registration number she could only partially identify as starting with “UAC.”

“From the rearview mirror, I saw him trying to cock a gun from a distance,” Nebanda recounted.

Her driver quickly reversed to Nampologoma trading centre, where a crowd gathered and scared off the attacker.

“The large number of people approaching my car caused the motorcycle rider to speed away,” she explained.

Nebanda revealed she has received numerous threats, alleging that some of her political opponents might be behind the attack.

“I have had several threats, with credible information indicating some of my rivals are involved,” she said, condemning the toxic politics of hostility and insisting she has avoided such tactics.

She has filed a report at Butaleja Central Police Station, and investigations are ongoing, though the District Police Commander was not available for comment.

This incident is especially alarming given Nebanda’s family history—her sister, former Butaleja Woman MP Cerinah Nebanda, died under mysterious circumstances in 2012.

Her survival is credited to her alert driver and the timely intervention of bystanders.

As the investigation proceeds, the episode underscores the urgent need for enhanced security for politicians and the promotion of peaceful political engagement.
