“Apologize or Resign”: Chairman to His Son Over Photo with Museveni

Fred Nyanzi, popularly known as Chairman Nyanzi and head of mobilization for the National Unity Platform (NUP), has expressed disappointment over a viral photo of his son, Makerere University Guild President Ssentamu Churchill James, posing with President Yoweri Museveni.

The photo, which surfaced on Tuesday and quickly spread across social media, shows Churchill alongside President Museveni and other student leaders during the launch of the university’s Research and Innovations Week. The image sparked mixed reactions, with critics questioning how a relative of opposition leader Bobi Wine could appear with the president, while others argued Churchill was simply fulfilling his official duties.

In a video statement, Nyanzi voiced his dismay, saying many Ugandans fighting for change—including himself and Bobi Wine—have suffered under Museveni’s regime through arrests and torture. He insisted that Churchill should not have agreed to the photo.

“My son, the man you took a photo with has caused pain to me, your uncle Bobi Wine, and many other Ugandans. It’s painful that you stood beside him for a photo,” said Nyanzi.

He called on Churchill to issue a public apology and, if unwilling to do so, resign from his Guild presidency and focus solely on his education.

Churchill was elected as the 91st Guild President on an independent ticket after NUP’s youth wing, People Power, backed another candidate, Ismail Basalirwa, in the race.
