Parents Burn Down Teacher’s Home in Kabale Over Alleged Demonic Attacks on Pupils

Tension remains high in Maziba sub-county, Kabale district, after angry parents torched the home of Monday Expedito, a teacher at Maziba Mixed Primary School, whom they accuse of being behind a series of alleged demonic attacks affecting pupils.

The school was recently shut down by district authorities following ongoing reports of strange illnesses among students, which began last term. According to parents, the affected children first suffer severe headaches, then exhibit unusual behavior such as vomiting, banging their heads on walls, and shouting Expedito’s name—symptoms said to occur only while they are at school.

The crisis intensified around two weeks ago when 16 pupils reportedly experienced these symptoms in one day. Some parents believe the disturbances are connected to a demand by Expedito that each pupil bring a 100-shilling coin, which they suspect may have been used to spark the spiritual attacks.

This marks the second major incident, with a previous one disrupting end-of-term exams last term. Despite prayer sessions and exorcisms conducted by Catholic Charismatic clergy, the issue persists. On Monday, enraged parents and locals attacked Expedito’s property.

They set fire to three of his houses, destroyed his banana plantation, and killed more than 20 pigs and several goats.

The violence prompted swift intervention from Kabale Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Godfrey Nyakahuma and District Education Officer (DEO) Moses Bwengye Tumwijukye, who visited the scene. Nyakahuma condemned the mob action and urged residents to remain calm, stating that Expedito will be summoned to record a statement at Kabale Central Police Station. He warned parents against taking the law into their own hands, cautioning that those involved in violence could face arrest.

DEO Bwengye instructed the school to resume normal operations while clergy-led spiritual efforts continue. He also directed that another teacher, Doreen Nayebare—alleged to have worked with Expedito—stay away from the school pending investigations. Meanwhile, Maziba sub-county LC III chairperson Onesmus Mutungi advised that Expedito should temporarily leave the area for his own safety.

Local leader Tofiri Ngabirano said previous efforts to engage the teacher had failed and accused him of once slaughtering a hen alongside a pupil—an act many residents believe triggered the disturbances.

Expedito and his family are said to be in hiding, while police have launched investigations into both the reported spiritual incidents and the violent community backlash.
