20 UPDF soldiers injured as military truck overturns in northern Uganda

At least 20 Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) soldiers were injured after a military truck carrying newly deployed personnel overturned in northern Uganda on Saturday.

The soldiers were among hundreds who graduated from the Labwordwong Military Training School on Thursday and were travelling to their respective duty stations under the Fourth Infantry Division when the accident happened.

Although early reports indicated the crash occurred along the Agago–Pader road, later information suggested the incident may have taken place in neighbouring Omoro District.

According to sources, the truck had stopped to refuel at the Fifth Infantry Division headquarters in Acholi Pii, Pader District, before continuing its journey to the Fourth Infantry Division, where it later overturned.

Military sources said two soldiers sustained serious leg injuries, while the remaining casualties suffered injuries of varying severity. All the injured are reportedly receiving treatment at the Fourth Infantry Division barracks.

An army officer, who requested anonymity because he was not authorised to speak to the media, said “none of the injuries had been confirmed as fatal.”

Capt. David Kamya, the Fourth Infantry Division Public Information Officer, confirmed that a military vehicle had been involved in a road crash but declined to provide further details.

The UPDF had not issued a detailed statement on the cause of the accident or the circumstances surrounding the crash by the time of publication.

The incident comes only days after another fatal road accident in northern Uganda, where an Opit Travellers bus collided head-on with a trailer in Bobi Sub-county, Omoro District, along the Kampala–Gulu highway, leaving 15 people dead and 28 others injured.
