Police Stuck with 24 Lost Children, Arrests 40 Over Martyrs’ Day Disruptions

As of yesterday evening, police were still caring for 24 children who had been separated from their parents during the Martyrs’ Day celebrations.

The Child and Family Protection Unit of the police, which had set up a dedicated tent to manage such incidents as done in previous years, was attending to the children. Some were visibly distressed and crying, while others played quietly as they waited to be reunited with their families.

According to Ms. Carolyn Kushemererwe, an officer in the unit, the group comprised 16 girls and 8 boys. She said the children would remain at the church grounds until Wednesday. If not claimed by then, they would be transferred to the Central Police Station (CPS) for further care.

“Many people are still inside the shrine, so we believe several of these children will be reunited with their families before the end of the day,” Ms. Kushemererwe explained. She also noted that more cases were likely, as additional reports of missing children continued to come in.

“We believe some of the children may have wandered off and might be located by other police teams,” she added.

Meanwhile, Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Spokesperson Mr. Luke Oweyesigire reported that at least 40 individuals were arrested for various offenses, including phone theft and public disturbances. He said a full list of the suspects would be published soon.

Despite the arrests, the police and other security teams were commended for their professionalism and assistance throughout the event. Officers guided pilgrims along designated routes and ensured overall safety. Security personnel were highly visible across the venue, maintaining order and preventing potential threats.

Mr Oweyesigire stated that the police worked in coordination with other security bodies and stakeholders to ensure the success of the celebrations. However, there were disruptions in phone and internet services at both the Catholic and Anglican shrines in Namugongo, reportedly due to President Museveni’s presence at the Anglican site.
