“Opposition Infiltrated Our Party Register” -NRM

The National Resistance Movement (NRM) Secretariat has accused members of the opposition of infiltrating its membership register.

Speaking to this newspaper, Mr. Emmanuel Dombo, the party’s director for information and publicity, said they are aware of the alleged infiltration but are confident it can be addressed. “One of the reasons we initiated this exercise was to allow local communities to identify and remove such individuals. If someone isn’t genuinely in the register, how did they end up being elected?” he questioned.

Mr. Dombo noted that in a developing democracy, no process is entirely flawless. However, he expressed confidence that even if some infiltrators managed to participate, they would not significantly affect the decisions of the majority. The NRM held its grassroots LC party primaries yesterday.

At Villa Park Polling Station in Nsambya, Kampala, election official Mr. Abdulatwib Nankunda reported that voting was suspended in the Nsambya Railways Zone after complaints from legitimate voters about unfamiliar individuals whose names appeared on the register. He noted that some voters were hesitant to publicly call out the suspected intruders.

In another incident at Nakawa Division headquarters, Mr. Rudolf Abas, who was elected vice chairman for veterans, also raised concerns about unauthorized voters. He urged party leaders to carefully vet the newly elected officials.

“There are male names on the register, but when called out, it’s women who show up. This is one of the ways the opposition has managed to sneak into our party,” he claimed.
