Three Killed, Seven Injured as Sugarcane Truck Overturns on Kamuli-Jinja Highway

Residents of Nawanyago along the Kamuli-Jinja highway were left shocked after a Tata truck carrying sugarcane and passengers overturned, killing three people on the spot and injuring seven others. The truck, which belongs to Bugiri Sugar Factory, reportedly lost control before tipping over.

The victims who died have been identified as Nicholas Koozala, 25, from Itukulu Bukaya Zone in Nawanyago Sub-county; Derick Kibikyo, 16, of Bukula village, Nawanyago; and Asadi Ssajjabi, 26, from Buwolero-Mawolero Zone in Buwenge Rural, Jinja District.

Busoga North Police spokesperson, Mr. Michael Kasadha, stated that the truck was en route from Kamuli to Bugiri when the accident occurred at Nawanyago. “The seven injured passengers were taken to various medical centers for treatment, although their identities have not yet been established,” he noted.

The bodies of the deceased were taken to Kamuli General Hospital for postmortem, while the driver reportedly fled the scene and remains at large.

This accident comes amid rising road carnage in Uganda. Just hours later, another crash in Kapchorwa District claimed the lives of nine cattle traders and left 10 others seriously injured, underscoring the urgent need for better road safety enforcement.

According to the latest annual police crime report, road crashes in 2024 resulted in 25,808 casualties, a 4.4% increase from 24,728 in 2023. More accidents occurred during daylight hours, with Sundays recording the highest number of crashes (3,790), followed by Saturdays (3,765) and Mondays (3,686). Tuesdays had the fewest recorded incidents at 3,330.
