Six Arrested Over Murder in NRM Village Elections in Mayuge

Six people have been arrested in connection with the killing of Peter Kaluya, a resident of Bulubude village in Malongo sub-county, Mayuge District, following violence that erupted after local elections.

The suspects—Abdullah Mateeka, Karim Kiwanuka, Jamiru Opili, Yasin Tibiita, Halima Nabirye, and Aisha Mutesi—are currently being held at Mayuge Central Police Station on charges of murder and attempted murder.

According to police reports, the chaos ensued after Tuesday’s National Resistance Movement (NRM) village elections, where Isaac Lwakala was declared the winner over Khuzaima Wante. In response, Wante’s supporters allegedly attacked the presiding officer and confiscated the election results.

Kaluya, who was reportedly trying to help the officer escape, was targeted by the mob and brutally beaten. He died en route to Iganga General Hospital. Busoga East Police spokesperson Michael Kafayo confirmed the arrests and noted that investigators have obtained evidence linking the suspects to the crime.
