Court Orders Prison to Present Bobi Wine’s Detained Bodyguards for Bail Hearing

A High Court in Masaka has issued a production warrant requiring the appearance of four private bodyguards of opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine, who have been on remand for nearly seven months.

The court order, dated 4 August, directs Masaka Main Government Prison to produce Achileo Kivumbi, Gadaffi Mugumya, Grace Wakabi (also known as Smart), and Edward Ssebuufu, widely known as Eddie Mutwe, before Lady Justice Nanziri Fatumah Bwanika on 14 August 2025 at 9:00 a.m.

The directive was signed by the Deputy Registrar of the High Court in Masaka and follows an earlier production order for Mutwe alone, issued on 30 July.

Defence lawyer Samuel Muyizzi confirmed that the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions and prison authorities have been formally notified of the court’s directive. He expressed hope that a long-awaited bail hearing will finally take place, noting that the detainees have not yet had their case heard despite health concerns.

“We hope that the court will begin hearing our bail application. Our clients have spent close to seven months in custody under difficult conditions without a fair opportunity to be heard,” Muyizzi said.

The four men face serious criminal charges linked to a robbery that allegedly took place on 18 May 2024. Prosecutors claim the group forcefully took a mobile phone and a green sweater from Margret Kayondo, a journalist with Radio Simba, using sharp weapons and sticks during the incident.

The reported attack happened in Manja Village, Kisekka Sub-county, in Lwengo District, where media crews had gathered to cover the funeral of UK-based Ugandan businessman Pascal Ssekasamba.

According to court documents, the group is also accused of robbing Shs 200,000 from two local residents, Rogers Mulungi and John Mukalaazi, and assaulting Drake Lubega and Haruna Ssekitto, whose phones were allegedly stolen.

Although the group was recently committed to the High Court for trial, the case has yet to be allocated a hearing date due to a shortage of judges in the Masaka region—a challenge that recently led local lawyers to go on strike.
