The incident occurred on 31 July in Tororo Town after police traced a stolen Toyota Fielder, registration UA541AA, to a location within the district. When officers closed in, Ssettwalo attempted to escape but lost control of the vehicle, hitting four pedestrians in Kisoko Sub-county.
The victims—identified as Charles Oketcho, Topista Akongo, Mercy Akongo, and Charles Okello—are currently receiving medical care at Tororo General Hospital.
Although Ssettwalo denied stealing the vehicle, he admitted to driving it on instructions to deliver it to another individual in Tororo.
In addition to the prison term, the court imposed a fine of UGX 700,000 for reckless driving resulting in injury. The charge of motor vehicle theft remains under investigation as police await a formal complaint from the vehicle’s owner.
The court emphasised the serious consequences of reckless behaviour on the road and called for greater responsibility to safeguard public safety.
