BREAKING: Court Grants Bail to Bobi Wine Bodyguard Noah Mutwe

After spending several weeks in custody under unclear circumstances, opposition figure Noah Mitala, widely known as Noah Mutwe and a close ally of Robert Kyagulanyi (Bobi Wine), was granted bail this morning by the Buganda Road Chief Magistrate’s Court.

Mutwe was released on a cash bail of Shs5 million, with each surety bonded at Shs50 million non-cash. He is also restricted from traveling abroad without court approval. This marks his second attempt at securing bail following a controversial May arrest that provoked public outcry and claims of political persecution.

The arrest occurred under troubling circumstances—reports indicate he was abducted from his Gombe residence on May 15 by unidentified men in an unmarked vehicle. For days, his whereabouts remained unknown, prompting alarm from civil society organizations and the Uganda Human Rights Commission. The National Unity Platform (NUP) accused state security agencies of orchestrating the abduction, drawing parallels with a previous incident involving Bobi Wine’s security chief, Eddie Mutwe.

Despite the serious nature of the allegations, the state has yet to present any formal evidence or initiate the trial, and heavy security was noted around the court during the bail hearing. Critics, including Bobi Wine, have described the episode as part of a wider crackdown on dissent, marked by arbitrary arrests, disappearances, and intimidation.

The court’s decision to grant bail is viewed by opposition supporters as a limited but welcome development. However, broader concerns persist regarding the opaque legal processes and increasing political repression in Uganda, especially as the country moves toward the 2026 general elections.
