The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) has confirmed the killing of two suspected terrorists during a counter-terrorism operation conducted early Tuesday morning in Munyonyo, an upscale neighborhood in Kampala.
According to the army, the suspects were located and eliminated in an intelligence-led operation aimed at curbing potential threats.
This incident occurred just a day before Uganda observes Martyrs Day—a major religious event that attracts thousands of pilgrims and typically involves increased security across the country.

“The security forces remain on high alert to ensure the Martyrs Day celebrations take place without incident,” said Colonel Chris Magezi, the acting Director of Defence Public Information, in an official statement released on Tuesday.
While the identities of the suspects and the specific threat they posed have not been revealed, the UPDF has called on the public to remain alert and cooperate with authorities.
“We urge citizens to stay calm but vigilant and to promptly report any suspicious persons, items, or activities to the security services,” Magezi added.
No security personnel were harmed during the operation, and investigations into the matter are currently underway.
Martyrs Day, held annually on June 3, commemorates Ugandan Christians who were executed for their faith in the late 1800s. It stands as one of the most important religious events in the country.
