Traffic Police Spokesperson SP Michael Kananura has highlighted how the department recently leveraged real-time technology to locate and retrieve a stolen vehicle on the outskirts of Kampala.
In a statement shared via his X (formerly Twitter) account on Tuesday, Kananura revealed that a Toyota Fielder with registration number UAU 812AW, which had been reported stolen from Buloba along the Kampala–Mityana Road on Monday, was recovered the following day in Mukono District. The recovery was made possible through the use of the Intelligent Transport Monitoring System (ITMS).

“The vehicle owner promptly filed a report at Central Police Station. The officer who received it immediately notified ITMSUG. Using live tracking capabilities, the system pinpointed the car’s location near Ntawo in Mukono, at coordinates latitude 0.392533 and longitude 32.736718,” he said.
Kananura emphasized that the ITMS, a government-run initiative, is not only key to improving road safety but is also instrumental in enhancing security and tackling vehicle theft.
The Uganda Police Force has previously faced criticism on social media for posting images of suspected car thieves while asking the public to help identify them.
Speaking on the matter, ITMS Public Relations and Communications Officer Ms. Priscah Pearl Ayesiga underscored the urgency of reporting vehicle thefts to the nearest police station as soon as possible to boost recovery chances.
She cautioned against disabling vehicle trackers, warning that some people mistakenly believe doing so can bypass the EPS Auto system. “This is counterproductive. The system is intended for aiding in vehicle recovery, not issuing tickets through tracking,” Ayesiga said.
She further explained that tampering with the tracker not only constitutes a legal offense but also jeopardizes the vehicle owner’s ability to recover their car if stolen. “Even if the tracker is removed, vehicles with registered license plates will still receive EPS tickets. Complying with the system is in the owners’ best interest,” she concluded.
