The ninth prosecution witness in the Kawempe North by-election petition left the High Court in shock after he demanded a balance of a bribe he claimed was promised to keep him from testifying.
Nathan Kyemba Muwanguzi, 30, surprised the courtroom when he alleged he had been paid to stay away from giving evidence.

Appearing visibly emotional, Kyemba told the presiding judge that Sylvia Nakyobe, a National Unity Platform (NUP) official, had given him Shs10,000, which he had already spent, and confessed he was still open to bribes because of his financial struggles as a young man.
“Please understand me. Nakyobe Sylvia from NUP gave me Shs10,000, and I used it,” Kyemba said in court.
He went on to claim that lawyers acting on behalf of MP Elias Nalukoola had promised him Shs1 million to avoid testifying for the petitioner but only gave him Shs200,000 — and he still wanted the remaining balance.
Although he couldn’t specifically name the person who bribed him, he pointed to a light-skinned defense lawyer, Mohammad Mbabazi, as one of the people involved in the alleged scheme.
During cross-examination, Kyemba had difficulty remembering important facts, such as when he met the plaintiff’s lawyer, Ahmed Kalule; which documents he signed; and when he took his oath.
Meanwhile, Kawempe North MP Elias Nalukoola, the first respondent in the case, has started giving his testimony — arriving in court with a calculator, a mathematical set, and a signature NUP beret.
