KAMPALA: Man Jailed for Two Years for Boxing his Boss

A Kampala court has sentenced 35-year-old Hakim Mugisa to two years in prison after he admitted to assaulting his cousin sister, Faridah Namuga, during a quarrel at her shop.

Mugisa, a resident of Nansana in Wakiso District, appeared before Buganda Road Chief Magistrate Ronald Kayizzi and pleaded guilty to assault causing actual bodily harm, an offense under Section 219 of the Penal Code Act.

The assault took place on May 14, 2025, around 4:00 PM at Qualicel Plaza along Nabugabo Road in Kampala’s Central Division.

Prosecutor Ivan Kyazze told the court that the attack followed a dispute at Namuga’s shop.
“Mugisa punched the victim, causing her to lose consciousness. She was later revived and treated for a deep cut on her forehead,” Kyazze said.

In delivering the sentence, Magistrate Kayizzi acknowledged Mugisa’s guilty plea and the fact that he had no prior convictions and had dependents. However, he stressed the gravity of the offense.

“You assaulted your cousin sister—someone who helped you settle in Kampala. Although you’re a parent and admitted guilt, the injury you caused justifies a custodial sentence. Two years in prison is fair and appropriate,” he ruled.

In his defense, Mugisa expressed remorse, ssaying,
“She brought me to Kampala, but we argued after she falsely accused me of stealing. That angered me. I didn’t use any object to hit her. I have two children—one is 13, the other is a toddler—and their mother is mentally ill. There’s no one else to care for them.”

Namuga, however, refuted his version of events. “He’s not telling the truth. He came to my shop with something hidden in a polythene bag,” she said, adding that she would let the legal system decide his fate: “Maybe two years in jail will help him change.”

Magistrate Kayizzi also informed Mugisa of his right to appeal the ruling if he wished to challenge it.
