Wife held over Kakumiro armed robbery that left husband injured

Police in Kakumiro District have arrested a woman following an armed robbery in which her husband, a local businessman, was shot and seriously wounded.

The incident occurred on Monday night in Rusolera village, Kijangi sub-county, as 45-year-old Jackson Tumwebazi and his wife, Ruth Ainembabazi, were returning home from their shop.

According to witnesses, three gunmen confronted the couple and demanded a bag of money. Tumwebazi is reported to have resisted, prompting one of the assailants to shoot him in the leg before seizing the bag. The attackers then escaped while firing shots in the air.

Residents alerted police after hearing the gunfire, and Tumwebazi was rushed for medical treatment. He later told officers he believed the attackers had been lying in wait in nearby bushes.

Albertine region police spokesperson Julius Hakiza confirmed Ainembabazi’s arrest, saying she was being held at Kakumiro Central Police Station to assist investigations. Detectives recovered two cartridges from the scene and have opened a case of aggravated robbery.

Police said they are probing whether the robbery may have involved an insider.

This attack follows a similar incident in April last year in Kikuube District, when armed men raided a trading centre and shot a woman in the hand while robbing her husband’s beer depot.
