Investigators allege that the grandfather sexually assaulted the child while his wife was away.

The incident came to light after the child’s mother noticed an unusual condition and sought help from Ngotowa Emmanuel. He reportedly observed a yellowish discharge from the toddler’s private parts, prompting the family to report the matter to police.

Medical examinations reportedly confirmed that the child had been sexually assaulted and sustained injuries.

Police have opened a case of aggravated defilement, recorded statements from witnesses, conducted medical examinations of the victim and suspect, and documented the scene through Scene of Crime Officers.

Investigations are continuing as detectives seek to establish the full circumstances surrounding the alleged offence.

Under Uganda’s Penal Code Act, aggravated defilement carries severe penalties, including the death penalty. The offence is classified as aggravated in circumstances such as when the victim is aged 14 or below, the offender is a parent or guardian, or the accused holds a position of authority or trust over the victim.

The law also provides for life imprisonment in applicable circumstances.
