Police in Western Uganda have arrested two brothers in connection with the suspected murder of a man believed to be romantically involved with their sister.
The incident, which occurred in the early hours of Sunday morning, took place in Kanyankyende Cell, Nyabitete Parish, Bugangari Sub-county, Rukungiri District. The deceased, identified as 24-year-old Gideon Kakuru, also known as Hakizimana Kaboy, was allegedly attacked by Posiano Ndyamuhaki and John Murokozi following a confrontation at a local bar.

According to Kigezi Region police spokesperson Elly Maate, the altercation began when Kakuru attempted to engage in intimate activity with the suspects’ sister, Justine Nsimire, at her bar. The brothers reportedly objected, leading to a physical attack that left Kakuru unconscious. He died while being transported to hospital after the local village chairperson, Wilber Habaasa, was called to assist.
Justine Nsimire has also been taken into custody for further questioning as investigations continue.
Authorities say the murder was reported at Bugangari Police Post, and the suspects are currently aiding police inquiries.
Police data reveals that Rukungiri District has recorded eight murder cases since July 1, making it the highest in the region during that time. Kabale and Rubanda districts followed with four and two cases, respectively.
Speaking on the recent spike in violent crimes, Rukungiri District Community Development Officer Posias Agaba linked the trend to growing levels of poverty and unemployment among youth. He noted that land disputes, alcohol abuse, drug use, and the rising cost of living were also contributing factors.
“We are carrying out community awareness campaigns through FM radios and talk shows, but our efforts to conduct face-to-face meetings at the sub-county and parish levels are hindered by limited funding,” Mr Agaba said.
