Rukungiri Policeman Arrested After Gun Goes Missing from Police Post

Ugandan police have launched an investigation and manhunt after a rifle loaded with ammunition was reported stolen from a police post in Rukungiri District.

The firearm, a submachine gun (SMG) loaded with 30 rounds, was allegedly stolen on the evening of 26 July 2025 at around 8:30pm from Rwakaraba Police Post. The weapon belonged to Police Constable Pius Muyambi, who is said to have left it unattended in his bedroom next to the station counter while he stepped out for supper.

Elly Maate, the police spokesperson for the Kigezi region, confirmed the incident and called on the public to assist authorities in locating the missing firearm.

“We urge the public to stay alert and report any information regarding the whereabouts of the stolen gun to local leaders or the nearest police office so that appropriate action can be taken,” Mr Maate said.

PC Muyambi has since been taken into custody to assist in the ongoing investigation.

The theft comes as police in the broader region continue to deal with a rise in armed robberies, particularly in the neighboring Kisoro District.

In one high-profile case from April 2025, five suspects were arrested in connection with a violent robbery in which a shop attendant was shot and UGX 23 million stolen. Those in custody include Ndishimiye Brandon, Munezero Bashir, Irankunda Desire, Irankunda Garlad, and Mfitundinda Slivan.

Separately, two Rwandan nationals, Irankunda Gerald and Habyarimana Vallence, were arrested over a series of four armed robberies in Kisoro. Police recovered an AK-47 rifle, ammunition, and uniforms in their possession. Gerald reportedly admitted to the crimes and revealed he had earlier escaped from Ruti Police Station in Mbarara during interrogation.

Police say efforts are being intensified to secure the region and prevent further incidents.

“We call upon the community to work closely with police to ensure a thorough investigation and to enhance public safety,” said Ben Niwamanya Kashumbusha, the Kisoro District Police Commander.
