A Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) soldier has been found dead from a gunshot wound in what police and military authorities suspect was a suicide.
The deceased, identified as Private Samuel Kwesiga, 32, was serving at Nyanamo Detach under the 35th Battalion in Kisoro District.

Colleagues said he was last seen on Sunday evening after watching a football match in Kigyeyo village, Nyamamo Town Council. He reportedly told fellow soldiers he was exhausted and was heading to rest in his uniport.
At about 7:00 a.m. on Monday, soldiers nearby heard a gunshot from his room. Initially assuming it to be an accidental discharge, they rushed to investigate. Looking through the window, they saw him lying in blood and forced their way inside, only to confirm that he had died.
Kigezi Regional Police spokesperson Elly Maate confirmed the incident. He said a spent cartridge, along with Kwesiga’s rifle and four magazines, were recovered at the scene.
The body was transferred to Kisoro Hospital mortuary for a post-mortem examination before being handed over to UPDF officials to manage burial arrangements.
Mr Maate urged security personnel to openly seek support when struggling with personal or professional challenges, stressing that suicide should not be seen as a solution.
