Mourners have bid farewell to Ms Alexandria Marinos, a National Unity Platform (NUP) supporter whose health is said to have deteriorated following her alleged detention and torture in 2022. She was buried on Monday at her ancestral home in Kasese District.
Opposition politicians joined relatives and friends in Makerere Kavule, Kampala, where they paid their last respects before the body was transported for burial.

Ms Marinos, 32, died on Sunday after a long illness. According to NUP, her health never recovered from what they describe as torture at the hands of security agencies after she was arrested in March 2022 for playing music by party leader Robert Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine.
Mr Kyagulanyi alleged in a post on X that Ms Marinos was abducted, held at the Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence (CMI) in Mbuya, and subjected to “torture and sexual assault.” The army denied the claims at the time, saying she was held for 48 hours, not three days.
Leader of Opposition Joel Ssenyonyi said Marinos continued to face intimidation even after her release and later fled briefly to Nairobi for safety. “She remained in and out of hospital until her passing,” he added.
During the funeral service, some mourners criticised state institutions for failing to investigate her complaints. Mawogola South MP Gorreti Namugga questioned why the Uganda Human Rights Commission had not acted on her petition, while Kassanda Woman MP Flavia Nabagabe vowed that women leaders would continue pushing for accountability.
NUP Secretary General Lewis Rubongoya also called on Ugandans to resist human rights violations, warning, “Today it is Marinos; tomorrow it might be another family.”
Family members described Ms Marinos as hardworking and dependable, saying she would be deeply missed.
