Police hunt woman over death of two-year-old boy in Kaliro

Police in eastern Uganda have launched a manhunt for a woman suspected of killing her two-year-old stepson in Kaliro District.

Officers in Busoga North say the suspect, identified as Afuwa Namugwano, is wanted in connection with the death of Rahim Kivuluga.

According to police, the child’s father, Awali Balikowa, became concerned after being told the boy had spent the night at a relative’s home. His suspicions grew when Namugwano reportedly left the house during the night without explanation.

Mr Balikowa alerted the local village chairman, Swaibu Gabudyeli, who organised a search and made announcements across trading centres in Bukamba Sub-county. When these efforts failed to locate the child, the matter was reported to police.

A canine unit was later deployed to assist in the search. The sniffer dog led investigators to a well behind the family’s home, where the child’s body was discovered.

Police say preliminary findings suggest the boy had been strangled before his body was disposed of in the well.

The district’s criminal investigations officer, Marble Tweheyo, said Namugwano is the main suspect and remains at large. Efforts to trace her are ongoing.

The child’s body has been taken to a local health facility for a post-mortem examination as investigations continue.
