Museveni Cracks Down on NRM Primary Fraud, Puts Tanga Odoi on the Spot

Amid escalating chaos in the aftermath of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) primaries, Electoral Commission Chairperson Dr. Tanga Odoi is facing mounting pressure following President Yoweri Museveni’s directive for a thorough review and correction of all fraudulent outcomes. The president’s remarks were triggered by widespread reports of malpractice—including bribery, vote tampering, and manipulation of voter registers—allegedly perpetrated by individuals he termed “self-seekers.”

In a direct rebuke, Museveni questioned why Dr. Odoi had not corrected the falsified results despite the transparency of the voting process. He emphasized that the anomalies, which have sparked nationwide protests and formal petitions from at least 97 aggrieved candidates, are politically and legally unacceptable.

To address the crisis, Museveni announced that the party’s legal tribunal—not Dr. Odoi—would handle disputes going forward, citing legal advice that the electoral chair cannot oversee the rectification of his own alleged errors. The president assured party members that justice would prevail, urging patience as the NRM seeks to restore credibility through institutional channels.

The controversy surrounding the primaries highlights a recurring pattern of internal strife within the ruling party, often marked by violence and electoral malpractice. Museveni’s latest intervention signals an attempt to reassert control and restore order, though it remains uncertain whether it will yield long-term reforms.
