The Katikkiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, has revealed that the Buganda Kingdom deliberately arranged for National Unity Platform (NUP) leader Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, and his former deputy for Buganda, Mathias Mpuuga, to sit side by side during the thanksgiving prayers for Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II.

The two political figures, who have been at odds following internal disagreements within the NUP, were seen seated together and conversing during the Kabaka’s 70th birthday thanksgiving mass at Lubaga Cathedral in Kampala.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with Sanyuka Television, Mayiga disclosed that the seating plan was coordinated at Bulange Mengo with the intention of encouraging unity.
“We deliberately seated Kyagulanyi and Mathias Mpuuga together during the Kabaka’s birthday prayers, and they did have a conversation,” Mayiga said. “Later, I asked them, ‘Why can’t you always communicate the way you did in church?’”
The rift between the two leaders stems from Mpuuga’s controversial acceptance of Shs500 million as a parliamentary commissioner, which the NUP described as unethical. His refusal to apologize led to his removal from the party’s leadership in Buganda.
Despite this fallout, their joint appearance and interaction at the mass drew attention and was widely interpreted as a positive gesture.
Mayiga praised the moment, emphasizing its significance: “I saw my son-in-law, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, seated with my uncle Mathias Mpuuga. They were talking. That’s the kind of engagement we want to see continue,” he said, drawing applause from the congregation.
