Armed robbers have stolen more than Shs10 million from a wholesale shop in Kitgum District, triggering a joint security operation to track down the suspects.

The robbery took place at about 8pm on Tuesday in Omiya Anyima Central Village, Panyum Parish, in Omiya Anyima Sub-county.

District authorities said four men were involved in the attack and fled with the cash before security personnel arrived at the scene.

Geoffrey Oguti, the Assistant Resident District Commissioner for Kitgum, said preliminary investigations and a review of CCTV footage indicated that the suspects carried out the robbery in a coordinated manner.

“The footage shows four individuals involved in the robbery. One was carrying an AK-47, and another had a panga. They managed to steal over Shs10 million before fleeing,” Oguti said.

Following the incident, a joint team from the Uganda Police Force and the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) launched an operation to pursue the suspects and strengthen security in the area.

Oguti appealed to residents to support the investigation by sharing information that could help security agencies identify and arrest those responsible.

“We urge the community to be alert and report any suspicious individuals or activities to the police. Public cooperation is critical in helping security agencies track down the criminals,” he said.

The robbery has renewed concerns about armed criminal activity in parts of northern Uganda, where security agencies have recently intensified surveillance and intelligence-led operations.

Aswa East regional police spokesperson Joe Oloya said investigators were still gathering details about the incident and that a full report would be released once inquiries are complete.

No arrests had been reported by the time of publication.
