Uganda’s Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) has named veteran legislator Nathan Nandala Mafabi as its presidential candidate for the 2026 general elections, marking a new chapter in the party’s leadership and electoral approach.
The decision was reached during a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting at the FDC headquarters in Najjanankumbi, where party leaders gave Mafabi their unanimous support. Members cited his extensive political background, firm commitment to the party’s ideals, and nationwide recognition as key factors in his selection.

Mafabi, the long-serving Member of Parliament for Budadiri West and a former Leader of the Opposition in Parliament, now takes the reins from Patrick Oboi Amuriat, the party’s 2021 presidential candidate and current president, who opted not to seek another term at the helm of the presidential ticket.
Party sources view the move as a strategic effort to strengthen the FDC’s grassroots presence and promote internal cohesion, following years of internal disagreements and questions over the party’s direction.
“This marks a pivotal moment for the FDC. We see Hon. Mafabi as a symbol of integrity and resilience—qualities we need to mount a serious challenge in 2026,” said a senior NEC official.
FDC officials say a detailed campaign strategy will be unveiled in the near future, outlining national mobilization plans, policy priorities, and regional outreach efforts as part of Mafabi’s rollout.
His entry into the 2026 race adds further momentum to an already intensifying opposition field, with several contenders poised to challenge President Yoweri Museveni, who has held power since 1986.
Mafabi will join a growing list of declared opposition figures, including Robert Kyagulanyi of the National Unity Platform, Mugisha Muntu of the Alliance for National Transformation, Mathias Mpuuga of the Democratic Front, Norbert Mao of the Democratic Party, and Joseph Kabuleta of the National Economic Empowerment Dialogue.
Other independent candidates such as John Katumba and Ivan Kisakye have also expressed interest in contesting the presidency, setting the stage for a competitive race as Uganda heads toward the 2026 polls.
