Eddie Mutwe Committed to High Court Amid Health Concerns and Assault Charges

Eddie Ssebuufu, better known as Eddie Mutwe and head of security for National Unity Platform (NUP) leader Robert Kyagulanyi, has been committed to the High Court to face charges related to assault in Lwengo District.

The proceedings at Masaka Grade One Magistrate’s Court on Monday were highly charged. Presided over by Magistrate Abudallah Kayiza, the session drew family members and NUP supporters, many visibly distressed by Ssebuufu’s poor health.

Detained for several days, Ssebuufu appeared weak and unwell, struggling to walk. Once known for his energy and strength, he now cut a frail figure.

“I was brought here bleeding, and no one helped me,” he told the court. “My arms feel dead. I can’t lift them; the pain is unbearable.” His words moved the courtroom to silence, and many, including his mother, wept openly.

His lawyer, human rights advocate Samuel Muyizzi, requested that he be transferred to a facility with adequate medical services. “It’s clear to everyone that his condition is dire. Keeping him in such a state is inhumane. We urge the court to transfer him to Luzira Prison for proper medical attention,” Muyizzi stated.

Kyagulanyi, speaking after Ssebuufu’s initial court appearance last week, claimed his bodyguard was subjected to severe torture. “They stripped him naked, electrocuted him, and made him salute a picture of President Museveni daily. He was also injected with unknown substances,” he alleged.

Ssebuufu’s mother later addressed the court, pleading tearfully for his transfer to a better facility. “My son was once strong; now he can barely walk. I beg you, let him receive treatment. No mother should see her child like this.”

Following a two-hour adjournment, Magistrate Kayiza ruled that Ssebuufu be transferred to Luzira Prison and committed to the High Court for trial, citing his need for proper medical care. He faces six charges, including aggravated assault.

While other suspects linked to the same incident—such as Achileo Kivumbi—have gone through court with minimal attention, Ssebuufu’s case has attracted public outcry due to his affiliation with the opposition and visible signs of mistreatment.

The High Court is expected to set a trial date soon. Meanwhile, his condition has renewed national concern over the treatment of political detainees in Uganda’s justice system.
