As Uganda gears up for the 2026 general elections, a new political party called the People Power Front has officially been launched.
The party, which adopts red and black as its official colors and features members wearing red berets, was unveiled during a ceremony held at Mestil Hotel in Kampala on Thursday afternoon.

Achilles Mukaabi, the party’s secretary general, hailed the formation of the party as a significant step toward strengthening democracy in Uganda.
“We are grateful to Ugandans who supported us and signed our forms, allowing us to register the party. This marks the entry of a new political force into Uganda’s landscape,” Mukaabi said.
He explained that the name People Power Front was reserved in December 2023, along with the party’s symbols and colours.
“Our official colours are red, black, and gold. The symbol is a clenched fist, and our emblem features a right-hand clenched fist embedded in the map of Uganda. Our slogan is ‘People Power, Our Power,’” Mukaabi noted.
He clarified that the party’s mission is to seek power through democratic means and emphasized that it is not a splinter group of the National Unity Platform (NUP).
“We’re not a faction of NUP. We are a group that carried the original spirit of the People Power movement, which initially operated as an unregistered entity. That’s why we took steps to officially register this party,” he explained, adding that the Electoral Commission ensured there were no conflicts with existing parties in terms of names or symbols.
Mukaabi also noted that many of the party’s founding members come from various opposition groups, most of whom are disillusioned by the current political environment.
“They’ve been frustrated by Uganda’s political climate, which is marred by extremism, cult-like followings, smear campaigns, blackmail, and intolerance,” he said.
The launch has sparked speculation, particularly due to the similarities in color schemes, slogans, and symbols with those of the National Unity Platform (NUP), Uganda’s leading opposition party led by Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu (Bobi Wine).
