US to Continue Funding Uganda’s Public Health Sector – Ambassador Popp

The United States Ambassador to Uganda, William W. Popp, has reiterated America’s commitment to supporting Uganda’s public health initiatives, despite concerns over possible funding cuts.

“The United States remains dedicated to working alongside Uganda, the Ministry of Health, its laboratory networks, healthcare workers, and all other public health and safety sectors,” Ambassador Popp stated.

He noted that the US had contributed over $8 million (approximately 29.3 billion shillings) to assist Uganda, a contribution that played a crucial role in helping the country contain its recent Ebola outbreak.

“We are proud that our investment — through resources, expertise, and partnership — helped to end the outbreak, save lives, and strengthen both our countries’ readiness for future health emergencies,” Popp said.

The US Department of Health and Human Services will also extend support for continued disease surveillance and outbreak prevention efforts, including a donation of 500 rapid detection test kits.

“These resources will boost early detection, improve our collective response capabilities, and enhance safety for all,” Popp added.

Uganda’s Minister of Health, Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng, officially declared the Ebola outbreak over after two full incubation periods (42 days) passed without any new infections, following the discharge of the last confirmed case on March 14, 2025. The outbreak resulted in two deaths and 14 confirmed cases.

Dr. Aceng credited the outbreak’s successful containment to Uganda’s strengthened health system, consistent investments in surveillance and response infrastructure, and effective multisectoral coordination.

“This marks Uganda’s eighth battle with Ebola, once again demonstrating our resilience against recurring epidemics,” she said. “It also showcases Uganda’s growing capacity to handle health emergencies.”

World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus commended Uganda’s efforts, saying, “Together, we can stop epidemics in their tracks.”

Dr. Aceng called on the public to remain alert and to report anyone exhibiting Ebola-like symptoms. She also assured that the Ministry of Health would continue supporting Ebola survivors with monitoring and reintegration efforts.
