UPDF Soldiers Storm Lubowa Police, Beatup Officers and Civilians

In a startling breach of protocol, a group of armed Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) soldiers raided Lumuli Police Station in Wakiso District to forcibly free two fellow soldiers detained for allegedly staging an illegal roadblock.

The incident began when two soldiers, identified as Private Job Reti and Private Orete Were, were arrested by police after reportedly setting up an unauthorized roadblock on the Ndejje-Kakoola road, where they allegedly harassed locals and disrupted transport.

Following their arrest, approximately eight armed soldiers arrived at Lumuli Police Station in a Toyota Land Cruiser. They demanded the release of their detained colleagues. When police officers refused, the soldiers reportedly overpowered them, placed them at gunpoint, and freed the two suspects.

The group then proceeded to Mutungo Police Post, claiming the freed soldiers required medical attention, though they did not specify the health facility to which they were being taken.

Brigadier General Felix Kulayigye, the UPDF spokesperson, confirmed the incident, stating that three soldiers have been arrested in connection with the raid. He emphasized that the UPDF does not tolerate indiscipline and that the suspects will be arraigned in court.

This event has raised concerns about the conduct of military personnel and the potential implications for civil-military relations in Uganda.
