A 48-year-old woman identified as Dusabe Nyiramahirwe and a refugee from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is under detention at St. Francis Mutolere Hospital in Kisoro, Uganda, over an unpaid medical bill.
The woman, whose detention is now three weeks, was admitted to the hospital on February 3, 2025, after suffering a leg fracture from a well.

“I was injured while fetching water. I was initially taken to Kisoro Government Hospital, which referred me to Mutolere for further treatment,” Nyiramahirwe narrated
After a week of treatment, Nyiramahirwe was presented with a bill totaling Shs302, 000, and her husband, Uwimana Nyambona, managed to raise Shs150, 000 through digging gardens, but the hospital insisted on the full payment before releasing her.
“I am appealing to the hospital management to be considerate and release me,” Nyiramahirwe said, adding that she and her husband were “committed to raising the remaining balance.”
Uwimana Nyambona, Nyiramahirwe’s husband, fled the DRC with his wife and eight children due to ongoing conflict and said the family was struggling financially.
The family had been initially resettled in Nakivale refugee camp but returned to Maziba near the border due to persistent malaria.
“It is becoming challenging to look after our children and my wife,” Uwimana lamented.
