The Kawempe Chief Magistrate’s Court has charged 34 National Unity Platform (NUP) supporters, including Kyadondo East MP Muwada Nkunyingi and Makindye East MP Derrick Nyeko, with public nuisance, obstruction of traffic, and malicious damage to property. The accused were remanded to Luzira Prison until March 7.

The group was arrested on Monday near the NUP headquarters in Makerere-Kavule, Kampala, while preparing to participate in a procession to Kawempe Muslims Primary School for a campaign rally in support of Erias Luyimbazi Nalukoola, the party’s flagbearer for the Kawempe North parliamentary by-election. NUP President Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, later led the rally.
Grade One Magistrate William Muwonge stated that the accused disrupted traffic and damaged a police vehicle. He further noted that they walked on the road shouting NUP slogans while carrying stones, which allegedly posed a danger and inconvenience to the public.
In court, several NUP supporters appeared with visible injuries. Defense lawyer Medard Ssegona pleaded for their release on bail to receive medical treatment, but the request was denied. Ssegona also called for an investigation into the conduct of the Joint Anti-Terrorism Task Force (JATT), alleging that NUP supporters were subjected to extreme brutality.
Only five of the accused—Nyeko, Kato, Kakaire, Mutebi, and Kalule—were granted bail, while the others, including Muwada, remained in custody. Lawyer George Musisi condemned security forces for alleged torture, stating that NUP would take legal action against JATT and the Attorney General for human rights violations.
