Two men have been arrested in connection with the assault of a police officer and a civilian in a refugee settlement in Uriama, Terego District, northern Uganda.

The suspects, identified only as Muse and Ayikobua, are currently held at Terego Central Police Station. Several other individuals involved in the attack remain at large. According to Collins Asea, the North and West Nile regional police spokesperson, the officer and Gala had tracked the stolen generator to Ofua 1. Upon their arrival, they were reportedly ambushed by a gang of suspects.

“The attackers targeted the officer, beating and stabbing him with a machete and leaving him injured. Peter Gala managed to escape unharmed. The officer was forced to flee, abandoning his motorcycle, which the suspects later damaged,” Asea said.

During the incident, a bystander, Robert Abeku, who tried to assist the officer, was also violently assaulted. While several assailants escaped, two were apprehended by local residents who responded to the scene and handed them over to the police.

The injured officer is currently receiving care at Uriama Health Centre III. Authorities also reported that the attackers stole the officer’s wallet containing Shs 680,000.

Following the intervention of the Ofua officer-in-charge and local leaders, police recovered the officer’s vandalized motorcycle and his handcuffs. A manhunt is underway for the remaining suspects, and authorities have cautioned the public against interfering with or attacking officers performing their duties.
