Police in western Uganda have opened investigations into a road crash involving a passenger bus that killed a three-year-old child and injured several others in Ntungamo District.

The accident happened at about 19:45 local time on Thursday along the Ntungamo–Kabale highway at Omunshenyi. The Bismarkan bus, registration number UBB 798J, was travelling from Ntungamo towards Kabale when it was involved in the collision.

Rwizi Region police spokesperson Samson Kasasira said the bus struck the rear of an unidentified vehicle that was moving in the same direction.

“It is suspected that the bus driver did not maintain the correct lane and ran into a vehicle ahead,” Mr Kasasira said.

Police said the impact caused the driver to lose control, after which the bus overturned. A three-year-old boy, identified as Arimpa Ian, died at the scene. Several passengers sustained serious injuries.

The injured were taken to various health facilities in the area, although police said details of the hospitals were still being compiled.

The child’s body was taken to Doctor’s Referral Hospital mortuary, where it is being held pending a post-mortem examination.

Police have since towed the damaged bus to Rubaare Police Station for inspection by the Inspector of Vehicles as part of ongoing investigations.

Authorities are also working to identify the bus driver, the injured passengers and the other vehicle involved, including its driver.

Mr Kasasira urged motorists to adhere to traffic regulations, particularly keeping a safe distance and observing lane discipline, to reduce the risk of similar accidents.
