Uganda’s Minister of Gender, Labour and Social Development, Betty Amongi, has accused the Speaker of Parliament, Anita Among, and the Minister of Health, Dr Jane Ruth Aceng, of masterminding widespread electoral malpractice during the January 15, 2026 parliamentary elections in Lira City.
Speaking during a radio talk show in northern Uganda, Ms Amongi, who unsuccessfully contested for the Lira City Woman Member of Parliament seat, claimed the vote was deliberately manipulated to block her from winning.

She alleged that results from several polling stations showed abnormally high numbers of votes cast in favour of Dr Aceng, raising concerns about the credibility of the process.
Ms Amongi further claimed that a member of the security forces admitted to her that he had personally marked around 2,000 ballot papers in favour of Dr Aceng. She added that similar allegations emerged from Odokomit, Ngetta and Boke areas, where she said thousands of votes were fraudulently allocated to her rival.
According to Ms Amongi, the Speaker of Parliament played a direct role in influencing the outcome of the election. She alleged that Ms Among mobilised both financial resources and personnel to interfere with the vote.
“She came with more than ten buses of people and mobilised soldiers to distribute money and tick ballots,” Ms Amongi claimed, adding that she believed about Shs4.2bn was used in the alleged operation.
Ms Amongi said the actions were aimed at ensuring her political defeat, arguing that her candidacy was viewed as a threat by senior figures within the ruling establishment.
“I was not just running against Dr Aceng; I was running against the Speaker of Parliament,” she said, alleging that influential leaders had openly expressed opposition to her joining Parliament.
She concluded by calling on the relevant authorities to investigate the allegations, warning that public confidence in Uganda’s electoral system had been seriously damaged.
“Our votes were taken away,” she said. “I appeal for a thorough investigation to protect the integrity of our elections.”
No response had been immediately issued by the accused officials at the time of publication.
