Speaker of Parliament Anita Among has secured a decisive victory in the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Central Executive Committee (CEC) elections, overwhelmingly defeating former Speaker Rebecca Kadaga for the position of female vice chairperson.
Official results announced on Wednesday showed Among winning with 11,680 votes—about 92% of the total cast—compared with Kadaga’s 902. The scale of the victory has been described by observers as one of the most one-sided contests in recent Ugandan party politics.

From the outset, signs of Among’s dominance were clear, with delegates visibly lining up behind her even before voting ended. She went on to sweep every region of the country, including overseas delegates, with wide margins.
In the diaspora, Among received 71 votes against Kadaga’s 36. In the Rwenzori region, she won 835 votes compared with Kadaga’s 13. Other results included: Teso (899 to 1), Ankole (1,524 to 65), Greater Masaka (581 to 25), West Nile (1,022 to 7), Acholi (744 to 21), and Lango (687 to 12).
Even in Busoga, Kadaga’s political base, Among performed strongly. She captured five districts—Bugiri, Kaliro, Namayingo, Iganga, and Buyende—where she secured 499 votes to Kadaga’s 455. Analysts say Among has successfully eroded Kadaga’s long-standing networks in the region, leveraging her marriage to Buyende MP Moses Magogo and forging alliances with legislators who once depended on Kadaga’s patronage.
Kadaga’s victories were restricted to a handful of areas, including Bugweri, Namutumba, Kamuli, Luuka, Jinja District, Jinja City, and Mayuge.
Political commentators view the landslide as a reflection of Among’s rising influence in the ruling party, pointing to her ability to consolidate support nationwide while weakening Kadaga’s strongholds. The outcome, they suggest, marks a significant shift in NRM’s internal balance of power and signals Among’s growing role in shaping political dynamics ahead of the 2026 elections.
