At least six people are feared dead after flash floods swept them away while they attempted to cross a flood-prone stretch of road in eastern Uganda’s Bulambuli District.
The incident happened on Wednesday evening in Chuma Village, Lusha Subcounty, when River Kyuma burst its banks following heavy rainfall. Witnesses said two motorcycles carrying the victims were dragged into a gorge by fast-moving waters.

Local officials confirmed two of the dead as Ronald Wolimbwa and Rogers Musamali, while four others remain missing. Rescue teams have so far retrieved one motorcycle with its rider’s body, while the second was found abandoned with no sign of its passengers.
Residents told the BBC the spot—on the Bulago–Buginyanya road—has flooded before but never with fatal consequences. “The river has always crossed the road and damaged property, but people still managed to pass. This time the water was too strong,” one villager explained.
The crossing, which serves as both a road and a bridge dating back to 1952, has long been considered a danger point. Whenever the river swells, it cuts off transport in the area.
Police and local leaders have now cautioned residents against attempting to cross flooded roads, warning that heavy rains in the Mount Elgon sub-region are expected to continue.
