Sheema Business Woman Killed, Lover Dies in Suspected Murder-Suicide

Police in Sheema District, western Uganda, are investigating a suspected case of domestic violence in which a 27-year-old woman was killed and a man later found dead in what appears to have been a murder-suicide.

Authorities said Allen Turyasiima, a shopkeeper, was attacked and killed on Friday by Osward Mushumbusha, a mechanic in his 20s. Mushumbusha’s body was later discovered hanging from a tree about a kilometre away.

Greater Bushenyi Regional Police spokesperson SP Apollo Tayebwa told reporters that the incident stemmed from an extra-marital relationship that had turned violent.

“Turyasiima had abruptly ended an affair with Mushumbusha after her husband became aware of it,” SP Tayebwa said.

According to police, Mushumbusha allegedly stormed the woman’s shop in Kangole Cell, Rugazi Parish, Masheruka Sub-county, armed with a panga. He is said to have locked the shop before hacking her to death. A blood-stained panga believed to have been used in the attack was recovered near his body.

Both bodies were taken to Kabwohe Health Centre IV for post-mortem examinations.

SP Tayebwa condemned the act, warning against “violence driven by lawlessness, anger and ego,” and said investigations were continuing.

Local leaders expressed concern about what they described as rising cases of rejection-related killings and domestic disputes in the district.

Resident District Commissioner Jane Asiimwe Muhiindo said many families were under social and emotional pressure, which often escalated into violence.

“Most of the murder cases we encounter involve rejection or misunderstandings between partners,” she said. “We are working with community leaders, police and religious institutions to step up engagement and intelligence so that some of these tragedies can be prevented before they occur.”
