Emergency services in western Uganda are responding to a serious accident involving a trailer that overturned in Kasunganyanja, Bunyangabu District, leaving an unspecified number of people feared dead and others reportedly trapped under the wreckage.
The incident occurred on Saturday along the Fort Portal–Kasese highway, a route known for its sharp curves and steep slopes. The truck, which was travelling from Kampala to Kisangani in the Democratic Republic of Congo, was loaded with goods including biscuits, canned food, beans, and educational supplies when it lost control and overturned.

Rescue efforts involving both emergency personnel and local volunteers began shortly after the crash. However, by Monday morning, authorities had yet to confirm how many people had died or survived the accident.
“We are doing everything possible to rescue those who may still be trapped,” a responder at the scene told reporters. “The wreckage is significant, and we’ve had to bring in heavy machinery to assist.”
The cause of the crash has not been established, but police say investigations are underway. Officials are expected to release more information as the situation develops.
Local leaders have for years expressed concern about the dangers of this stretch of road, which has seen multiple accidents involving large transport vehicles.
Authorities are advising drivers to remain cautious, particularly as recovery operations continue.
