Police in Uganda have opened an investigation after a Senior Six student at Seeta High School’s Mbalala campus drowned in the school’s swimming pool on Sunday evening.
The student, identified as 21-year-old Kevin Nsamba, reportedly drowned at around 5:30pm shortly after playing football with classmates. According to police, he was among a group of students who proceeded to the pool, where a training session was ongoing under the supervision of a lifeguard.
Speaking to the press, Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Police Spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire said Nsamba is believed to have jumped into the deep end of the pool.

“At the time, there were trainees in the pool under the supervision of a trainer or lifeguard, and Nsamba reportedly jumped into the deep end,” Owoyesigyire said.
Nsamba was not immediately missed. His absence was only noticed later that evening following a movie screening at the school. A search was launched overnight after students raised the alarm. The disappearance was escalated through school authorities before police were contacted on Monday.
Police recovered Nsamba’s body from the pool shortly after arriving at the scene. A case of suspected drowning has been registered, with investigations now led by Mukono Police Station.
A team of detectives, crime scene officers, and forensic experts—including specialists from the police ICT department—visited the school on Monday to gather evidence. The swimming pool trainer has since been taken into custody to aid the inquiry.
The deceased’s body has been transported to Mulago City Mortuary for a post-mortem examination. CCTV footage is being reviewed as part of the ongoing investigation.
“We are currently awaiting autopsy results and reviewing all available evidence,” said Owoyesigyire. “More information will be shared as the investigation develops.”
