S.4 Leaver Crushed to Death in Tragic Mukono Paper Mill Accident

A 19-year-old Senior Four leaver, Gerald Mukisa Waswa, was tragically killed after falling into a paper mill at Rhino Company Limited in Kasenge B Village, Mbalala, Mukono District. Mukisa, a former student of Namataba Senior Secondary School, had taken up casual work at the factory to save for his Advanced Level education.

According to his mother, Nalongo Annet Nakachwa, Mukisa was a hardworking boy with big dreams. “He had just completed his exams and was working to raise school fees.

I never imagined losing him like this,” she lamented. His father, Barnabas Mukwaaya, criticized the factory’s response, calling their offer of Shs 4 million for funeral expenses inadequate compared to the Shs 7 million the family had requested to transport the body to Mityana District.

The situation escalated when armed security reportedly chased away grieving family members seeking answers from the factory. Nama District Councilor Samuel Odongo condemned the factory’s poor working conditions and the employment of underage workers, while Namataba Town Council Mayor Douglas Namujali urged the government to enforce stricter labor regulations to prevent such tragedies.

Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Patrick Onyango confirmed an investigation into the incident, while Rhino Company’s management remained silent despite repeated inquiries. Mukisa’s body is currently at Mulago General Hospital’s morgue, awaiting further action.
