Gov’t to Prioritize Mpox Vaccination for Sex Workers

The Ministry of Health has launched a nationwide Mpox vaccination campaign, distributing 10,000 doses to high-risk groups, including male and female sex workers. Health Minister Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng reported that 9,980 individuals had been vaccinated by January 31, with an additional 100,000 doses expected from the African Center for Disease Control in the coming weeks.

Aceng emphasized that the vaccination drive aims to curb transmission, prevent severe illness, and reduce mortality rates. She also condemned misinformation from the YouTube channel Media Choice Television, clarifying that Uganda’s Mpox treatment center in Entebbe is a medical facility, not a detention center.

Addressing claims that the ministry exploits outbreaks for financial gain, Aceng dismissed the allegations as unfounded, stressing that managing outbreaks is a challenging and risky task, with concerns for both healthcare workers and patients.

To enhance care, the ministry has adopted a home-based treatment approach for mild Mpox cases, while severe cases continue to be managed at the national isolation facility. So far, 1,589 patients have received treatment, recovered, and been discharged.
