Police have refuted allegations that Fred Nyanzi, the National Unity Platform (NUP) chief mobilizer and brother to NUP president Robert Kyagulanyi, is being held by the Directorate of Crime Intelligence. Nyanzi was reportedly abducted by unidentified security operatives on Monday near Kubiri, shortly after leaving a meeting at NUP headquarters in Kavule.
NUP deputy spokesperson Alex Mufumbiro had claimed on Sanyuka Television that Nyanzi was in the custody of Crime Intelligence. However, in a statement released Thursday, police labeled Mufumbiro’s claims as false and accused him of spreading misleading information.

Meanwhile, NUP leaders, including the Leader of Opposition Joel Ssenyonyi, have expressed concern over Nyanzi’s disappearance, suggesting it reflects the government’s increasing crackdown on opposition figures. NUP’s legal team, led by George Musisi, has threatened to petition the courts to compel authorities to produce Nyanzi, whether dead or alive.
Nyanzi’s disappearance has heightened tensions within the NUP and left his family deeply distressed as efforts to trace his whereabouts continue.
