At least two people have been hospitalised following violent clashes during the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party’s LCIII and town council primary elections in Jinja District.
The incident occurred in Buwenge Town Council, where supporters of incumbent LCIII Chairperson Hassan Kinusa and rival candidate Ismail Ozanya allegedly clashed. District NRM administrator Irene Mawanda said tensions escalated over accusations of electoral malpractice, sparking assaults and property destruction.

“One supporter was stabbed in the stomach, exposing his intestines, during the confrontation between the two camps,” Ms Mawanda told reporters. She identified the injured as Kunya Charles, who was rushed to Teso Clinic in Jinja, and Musimo Ibrahim, who required stitches after a severe beating. Some homes were also reportedly set ablaze.
Security personnel from the Uganda Police Force and the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) were deployed to restore order.
Resident District Commissioner John Bosco Mubitto condemned the violence and warned that those responsible would face prosecution under electoral laws.
“Political competition should be conducted with fairness and respect, not through violence or intimidation,” he said, urging candidates and supporters to maintain peace.
Despite the unrest, official results showed Hassan Kinusa winning the primary with 2,935 votes, followed by Ismail Ozanya with 1,498. Other contenders included Andrew Waseme with 397 votes and Henry Kiswa with 20.
