Museveni Bans Vuvuzelas at NRM Delegates’ Conference

President Yoweri Museveni has ordered an immediate suspension of vuvuzelas at the ongoing National Resistance Movement (NRM) delegates’ conference taking place at Kololo Independence Grounds in Kampala.

The directive came after delegates blew the horns during vote counting and while announcements were being made by the NRM Electoral Commission, chaired by Dr Tanga Odoi.

Mr Museveni said the instruments were disrupting communication and disturbing the general atmosphere of the meeting.

“There will be no more blowing of vuvuzelas because they are becoming disruptive and undermining peace in the environment,” he said, urging delegates instead to use natural cheering and applause.

The president added that the noise from the plastic horns was unnecessary and affected the ambience of the conference. “The elections will continue with proper sound and natural excitement,” he told the gathering.

Vuvuzelas, long associated with football matches where fans use them to boost morale, have increasingly made their way into political rallies in Uganda.
