Mother Killed as her Newborn Baby Abducted in Tororo

Tororo is not about to calm down or get out of the news. A fresh tragedy has unfolded in Morwa “B” Village in Greater Paya Subcounty in Tororo district.

A 28-year-old Immaculate Awori and mother of five has been found strangled to death and her one-month-old baby missing.

The deceased woman’s husband, Steven Owere, alleged that his wife was lured from their home by a group of people who claimed to be charity workers assisting families with newborns.

“The group came to my home three times, accompanied by our Village Health Team leader, Charles Ochieng. Since they were all women and with my leader, I trusted them,” Owere said.

Only for his wife’s body to be found in a hotel room at Pararoma hotel in Tororo Municipality

The story was seemingly corroborated by another resident of Paragangi village in Paya subcounty in the same district, who recounted her narrow escape from a similar incident.

She was allegedly invited to meet the so-called donors at Paya Health Center III, only to become suspicious and leave when things seemed off.

The horrific incident has left the district population in shock and mourning.

“Some of the local residents in the district must be connected with this crime,” said Richard Owere Machika, a resident. “Locals are demanding answers and action to stop these crimes.”

The spate of crime aimed at abducting infants has driven local leaders into implementing community-driven safety measures.

District Chairperson John Okea announced a new initiative requiring homesteads to form security groups of ten households to monitor and report suspicious activity.

Assistant District Commissioner Aidah Kigen has urged residents at this trying moment to remain vigilant and report any suspicious individuals.

“Strangers should not be allowed into homes without consulting local authorities,” she emphasised.

The Tororo District Police Commander, Sadic Sabila, confirmed that investigations into the matter are underway. Some suspects, including the hotel manager, have been arrested.

“We urge locals to cooperate with the police as we continue with the investigations,” Sabila stated.
