Elgon Region police spokesperson Rogers Taitika said Wamala was beaten by a group of people, including the garden owner named only as Wahabu, before being left by the roadside in a critical condition.

He was taken to Mbale Regional Referral Hospital but later died of his injuries.

Police confirmed that Wamala’s brother, Pius Martin, reported the incident as a case of mob justice and murder. Officers say efforts are ongoing to trace Wahabu and others involved.

Mr Taitika condemned the killing, warning that mob justice is unlawful, and said police are confident the suspects will be brought to court to face murder charges.
