Inside Nandala Mafabi’s vision to unite Uganda and rebuild its economy

Ugandan opposition presidential candidate Nathan Nandala Mafabi has outlined his plan to restore national unity, create jobs, and strengthen the economy if elected in the 2026 general elections.

Speaking at his first campaign rally in Butabika-Luzira, Nakawa Division, the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) candidate said his leadership would “build bridges where none exist and repair those that are broken.”

Mr Mafabi accused President Yoweri Museveni, who has ruled for nearly 40 years, of failing to deliver services to citizens. “What he has failed to do in four decades cannot be achieved in the next five years. It needs new energy, and that new blood is Nandala,” he told supporters.

His pledges include allocating 100 million shillings to every village annually, giving each graduating student one million shillings, and dedicating 10% of the national budget to agriculture. He also vowed to revive cooperatives, support local investors over foreign ones, and invest in education and health care to close the gap between rich and poor.

“We want a united country where someone from Koboko is welcomed in Kisoro like a brother or sister. That is our vision – one Uganda, one people,” he said.

Mr Mafabi is competing against President Museveni of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM), Robert Kyagulanyi of the National Unity Platform (NUP), Mugisha Muntu of the Alliance for National Transformation (ANT), Robert Kasibante of the National Peasants Party (NPP), and Elton Mabirizi of the Conservative Party (CP), among others.

FDC president Patrick Oboi Amuriat urged Ugandans to back Mr Mafabi, saying he was best placed to address the country’s economic challenges. He also called on security agencies to ensure a peaceful campaign season.
