A cloud of grief hung over Mpalampa Village in Bukomansimbi District on Wednesday as mourners gathered to pay their last respects to Kevin Nsamba, a student of Seeta High School in Mukono, who died after drowning in the school’s swimming pool.

The 17-year-old’s sudden death has sparked sorrow and concern among family members, friends, and the wider school community. Kevin, remembered as a bright and promising student, was laid to rest at his ancestral home following a requiem Mass led by Rev. Fr. Gerald Lutaaya of Kassebwavu Sub-Parish.

Family members expressed unease over the circumstances of the drowning, questioning the school’s account of events. “We still have many unanswered questions,” said Samuel Mukiibi, Kevin’s uncle. “We are not convinced by the explanation given.”

There have also been calls for greater scrutiny of the school’s safety protocols, particularly around swimming facilities. Kevin’s relatives described him as a gifted young man whose life was cut short just days before his 18th birthday.

Seeta High School was represented at the funeral by staff and parents. Deputy Head Teacher Dennis Jemba Lutaaya described the late student as respectful and academically strong. “Kevin was a special student. We were actually preparing to celebrate his 18th birthday next week,” he said, overcome with emotion.

While many mourners expressed shock and heartbreak, some urged the community to trust in divine will. “Let’s remember that life and death are in God’s hands,” said one of the parents.

Police health services official AIP Dr Moses Byaruhanga addressed concerns surrounding the incident, saying early investigations had not found the school at fault. He explained that Kevin reportedly entered the swimming pool despite not knowing how to swim.

The incident has reignited conversations about student safety and the adequacy of supervision in schools. Meanwhile, Kevin’s family continues to seek clarity as they come to terms with their loss.
