Former Makerere University Guild President Lawrence Alionzi, popularly known as Dangote, has been declared the National Resistance Movement (NRM) flag bearer for the Arua City mayoral seat after winning a tightly contested primary election.
Alionzi, who recently crossed from the opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) to join the ruling NRM party, secured 24,374 votes, defeating incumbent Mayor Sam Nyakua Wadri, who received 20,829 votes. Former Arua Municipality Mayor also trailed with 4,704 votes.

The election process was marred by delays and controversy, as allegations of irregularities led to the temporary suspension of vote tallying on Thursday. The situation prompted the intervention of local security officials and NRM leadership, who appointed regional coordinator Joel Obonyo to oversee the completion of the exercise.
Alionzi’s victory marks a notable political shift in a region known for its strong opposition presence. His defection to the NRM drew mixed reactions from the public and opposition supporters, but was warmly welcomed by party leadership.
“It is very humbling to see young and educated people join the NRM,” said NRM Secretary General Richard Todwong. “The Movement is not something to joke about—it is permanent. It began with our grandfathers, came to us, and now it is time to pass it on to you, our children.”
Speaking after picking his nomination forms, Alionzi had expressed his motivation to actively shape the city’s future: “I want to be a participant, not a spectator, in shaping the future of my city.”
As he prepares for the general elections, Alionzi’s win has ignited discussions about political allegiance, youth involvement in governance, and the evolving dynamics of Uganda’s local leadership. His performance in the upcoming mayoral race will be closely watched by voters and political observers across the country.
